Opening of the Judaica Exhibtion at National Museum

MNK possesses one of the most interesting Judaica collection in Poland. A considerable part of this collection was deliberately assembled in the Museum before II World War, as an extremely precious set of Jewish cultural and spiritual material antiques. It was possible thanks to the subsidy for the purchase of Jewish artistic craftsmanship, awarded to the MNK by the Polish Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment in years 1935-1939. The collection of National Museum in Krakow, thanks to its diversity, allows for a thorough knowledge of the Jewish holidays and rituals celebrated in the Synagogue and Jewish home. The collection consists not only objects of artistic craft (mostly originated from East and Central Europe, although one can also find here examples of wares from the Bezalel School of Art) but also textiles, antique books and numismats.

We invite all the Participants of the Congress to visit our Museum (Main Building) on 19th July 2018, 7:00 PM, where we will inaugurate a new installment of the Judaica collection and present to the audience the newly released catalogue Judaica in the Collection of the National Museum in Krakow. Handicrafts, Prints and Manuscripts, Coins and Medals, Varia.

Its collections of numismatics and Far Eastern art are unique on a global scale. Since the end of 2016 MNK is also in possesion of world-famous Czartoryski Collection of crafts, militaria, prints and paintings (including Poland’s most famous painting, Lady with an Ermine by Leonardo da Vinci, and also the Landscape with the Good Samaritan by Rembrandt), which places it among the most important and interesting museums in Europe.

Exhibition: Archie Granot Papercuts

The Congress Participants are invited to visit the exhibition of works by Archie Granot, an Israeli paper cut artist, which will be held in the Exhibition Room at the Jagiellonian Library until 16 July.

Born in London, England in 1946, Archie Granot has lived in Israel from 1967. Prior to moving to Jerusalem in 1978, he was a member of an agricultural community where he milked cows and grew melons. A self-taught artist, Archie Granot made his first paper cut in 1979 and has been creating paper art ever since. His unique works, inspired by Jewish and Biblical texts, show that the revival of this traditional art form need not be a repetition of motifs and style.

His work is in public and private collections worldwide. These include the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; the Jewish Museum, New York; the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York; the Library of Congress, Washington D.C; the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art, Saint Louis; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Yeshivah University Museum, New York.

The exibition will be open on Mondays from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and throughout the rest of the week from 10.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. Additionally, it will be open on 7 and 14 July between 10.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. and on 16 July between 9.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. The exhibition was prolonged for one day (until July 16) especially for the Congress participants.
